When is an audit right for your ministry?

An independent CPA (Certified Public Accountant) audit is an examination of a ministry's financial statements by an independent auditor who is not affiliated with the organization. It is a thorough examination of the ministry's financial records and provides an opinion on whether the financial statements are presented in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other comprehensive basis of accounting.

Why an Audit May Be Right For Your Ministry

There are several reasons why a ministry might choose to undergo an independent CPA audit. One common reason is to comply with legal or regulatory requirements. For example, ministries that receive funding from the government or other organizations may be required to undergo an independent audit as a condition of receiving funding. Additionally, some states or municipalities may require ministries to undergo an independent audit if they exceed certain revenue thresholds.  Churches are typically exempt from providing an annual audit to state authorities, but ministries might be subject to reporting requirements.

Another reason for a ministry to undergo an independent CPA audit is to provide transparency and accountability to members, donors, and other stakeholders. An independent audit can provide assurance that the ministry's financial statements are accurate and reliable, and that funds are being used for their intended purpose.

A third reason is to identify and resolve financial issues. An independent audit can detect and highlight areas of concern, such as financial mismanagement, fraud or errors, and help the church to resolve these issues.

Is an Audit Required for Your Ministry

It's also important to note that an independent CPA audit is not a legal requirement for churches in the United States, but many churches choose to undergo an independent audit voluntarily, as it can provide assurance to members, donors, and other stakeholders that the church's finances are in order.

Here are a few references that provide information on independent CPA audits for ministry, churches, and other nonprofit organizations:

  • "Audits of Nonprofit Organizations" by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) provides an overview of the auditing process for nonprofit organizations, including churches, and includes information on the benefits of an independent audit.

  • "Independent Audits and Reviews for Not-for-Profit Organizations" by the Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF) provides detailed information on the different types of independent audits and reviews available for nonprofit organizations, including churches, and the benefits and limitations of each type.

  • "Audit Requirements for Nonprofit Organizations" by the National Council of Nonprofits provides information on the legal and regulatory requirements for nonprofit organizations, including churches, to undergo independent audits, and the benefits of undergoing an independent audit voluntarily.

These references can provide a good starting point for understanding the reasons why a ministry might choose to undergo an independent CPA audit, and the benefits and limitations of this type of examination.
